The Medication

What is semaglutide (Wegovy®)?

Wegovy® is semaglutide 2.4mg — a GLP-1 receptor agonist developed and FDA-approved specifically for chronic weight management in adults with obesity (BMI 30+) or overweight (BMI 27+) with at least one weight-related condition. Semaglutide mimics the GLP-1 hormone released after eating, suppressing appetite, slowing gastric emptying, and improving insulin sensitivity. In the pivotal STEP trials, participants lost an average of 15% of body weight over 68 weeks — the largest clinical weight loss result seen with any medication at the time of approval.

Comparing options: Wegovy® and Ozempic® both contain semaglutide, but they are different products. Ozempic® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes management at a maximum 1mg dose. Wegovy® is approved specifically for weight loss at the higher 2.4mg dose. FirstCall prescribes the appropriate product based on your clinical indication.
