What are oral GLP-1 receptor agonists?
GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic the GLP-1 hormone to suppress appetite, slow gastric emptying, and improve insulin sensitivity. Until December 2025 all FDA-approved GLP-1s for obesity required injections.
GLP-1 receptor agonists bind to receptors throughout the body — brain, pancreas, stomach, and gut — producing coordinated effects: reduced hunger signals, slower gastric emptying that prolongs fullness, improved insulin secretion, and reduced glucagon. The result is substantially reduced caloric intake without willpower struggle.
For years, oral GLP-1 was impossible — semaglutide was destroyed by stomach acid before absorption. Novo Nordisk solved this with SNAC (salcaprozate sodium), which enables gastric mucosal absorption on an empty stomach. The Wegovy® pill, FDA-approved December 22 2025, is the first oral GLP-1 specifically approved for obesity.

Wegovy® pill (oral semaglutide 25mg)
The same semaglutide as the Wegovy® injection — in a once-daily tablet. Dose escalation begins at 1.5mg and progresses to 25mg maintenance. Available in 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg strengths.
Rybelsus® — oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes
A different oral semaglutide product with a different FDA indication from the Wegovy® pill.
Rybelsus® (3mg, 7mg, 14mg) uses the same SNAC technology but at lower doses for blood sugar management in type 2 diabetes — not specifically for obesity. Weight loss is a significant secondary benefit.
If type 2 diabetes management is your primary concern, the physician you're connected with will assess whether Rybelsus® or injectable Ozempic® is most appropriate. For obesity management without diabetes, the Wegovy® pill or Zepbound® are the primary indicated options.
