Occasionally a very mild UTI may resolve without antibiotics, but this is not predictable and waiting risks the infection spreading to your kidneys. Kidney infections (pyelonephritis) are serious and require stronger treatment. We strongly recommend getting treated promptly rather than waiting it out.
Recurrent UTIs (3+ per year) are very common in women and warrant evaluation. Prevention strategies include staying well hydrated, urinating after intercourse, wiping front to back, avoiding scented products, and cranberry supplements. For frequent recurrences, we may recommend low-dose prophylactic antibiotics or post-coital antibiotics.
